USU Eastern’s women’s basketball team is hoping to do something that has never been accomplished in school history as six freshman will join eight sophomores, half of which were starters a year ago.
Sophomore Emmery Wagstaff, the Lady Eagles’ leading scorer last season, will be back along with Harley Carlisle, Amiperia Tia and Morgan Toluono, all of whom started in 20+ games for USUE. Wagstaff averaged 13.5 points per contest, converting on nearly 43% of her shots from the floor. “We have a great returning squad that played big minutes for us last year,” said head coach Chelsey Warburton.
Many locals will also recognize Lainee Jensen (sophomore) and freshmen Kacelyn and Kinlee Toomer, who all played on State Championship teams at Emery High. The Toomer twins are part of a talented freshman group that rounds off the crew.
“Our goals are to get better, win region and get to nationals,” said Warburton. She is hoping this year’s bunch can take USUE to it first ever women’s basketball region title and nationals appearance. To do so, the Lady Eagles will have to overpower “one of the strongest regions in the nation,” according to Warburton. “They all have very good squads.”
Region rival and nationally ranked #13 Salt Lake Community College will be one of many ranked opponents the Lady Eagles will face. They will also play #14 Central Arizona in a tournament in Las Vegas and #17 Western Nebraska, to name a few. “Those will be big games for us,” Warburton said. “We are excited about every game and getting better.” Be on the lookout for the Lady Eagles as they attempt to make school history.
