On Saturday, area boy scout troops flooded the area picking up bags, boxes and cans of food to donate to the Carbon County Food Bank. This is an annual statewide effort called Scouting for Food.
The boy scouts conduct the drive in the spring when donations typically drop off for the local food pantries. There was approximately 5,900 pounds of food collected in the Carbon County area this year. As of Monday, people were still dropping off bags of food that the scouts did not have a chance to pick up.
This drive was down from last year, when 7,000 pounds of food was gathered. The next organized food drive will be the Mail Carriers Food Drive on May 11. Individuals are also encouraged to bring donations in to the food bank directly.
The mountains of food that were gathered over the holidays are dwindling fast, but the need in the community remains steady.
