Community members from Emery, Carbon and many other surrounding areas gathered at the Emery High School Soccer Field for the annual Ethan Winter Memorial on June 21 and 22. The scholarship tournament is now in its eighth year, bringing the community and soccer family together for a great cause.
The games started on Friday night under the lights as the teams began the tournament enjoying some fun without the heat. There were five different divisions including third-fourth graders, fifth-sixth graders, seventh-eighth graders, highs school and adults. Games continued the next morning, as the athletes brought their competitive spirit, where eventually champions in all of the different age groups were crowned.
The scholarships were awarded to both Carbon and Emery athletes, going to one female and one male student. With the success of the 3 versus 3 Soccer Tournaments throughout the years, Troy Winter has organized another one this summer for a fundraiser to help Carbon Soccer’s head coach, Chad Cowdell. Cowdell was recently diagnosed with stage three colorectal cancer and is currently going through radiation treatment.
The tournament will be held at the Carbon County Fairgrounds on July 13. Check-Ins are at 7 to 7:45 a.m. followed by a mandatory meeting. Games will begin at 8 a.m. and those interested can register for the tournament by contacting Troy Winter at (435)-609-9618. The deadline will be on July 8.
