The stage was set for a championship game featuring the 18U Utah Freakz against a tough Chinese Taipei team with a solid defense. This was played in Westminster, Colorado on the Christopher Fields Softball Complex. The Freakz were down 11-3, when the bats began to come alive. They needed a big rally to finish securing the Triple Crown.

Brielle Sandoval, a member of the Lady Dinos softball team in her high school tenure, was up. The bases were loaded as Sandoval stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. She successfully got a hit that athletes always dream of, bringing home four runs with a grand slam.

“Honestly, I just felt like it was a dream. It was awesome. I was so excited and it really drove the team to be more excited and want to be in the game more. Chinese Taipai was really good. We haven’t seen people like that in a long time and it was awesome to play people like that,” said Sandoval.

The Freakz tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run homer from Hall. Going into the extra inning, Utah would get three up, three down on their opponent and take offense once more. With two outs and a runner on second, the Freaks scored the RBI off a hit to left field, solidifying them as Triple Crown Champions.

“All week, every single one of these amazing athletes showed up for each other and put on an exciting performance with strong pitching, tons of hits, multiple double plays, awesome defense and came out as undefeated bracket champions. What a way to go out for our last Colorado Triple Crown Tournament,” exclaimed Head Coach Anthony Ricci.

The Freakz won teams from all over the U.S. on the road to the championship game, winning teams from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Nebraska and more. The team will be heading to California next for the Premiere Girls Fastpitch (PGF) in a couple weeks.
