Mail carriers and community members across the nation participated in the 2014 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday.
Residents in Emery and Carbon counties, as well as the rest of the nation, placed bags of food out by their mailboxes for the postal carrier to pick up. The food will be donated to local food pantries.
According to a press release, this years event marks the 22nd anniversary of America’s largest-single day of giving and couldn’t come at a more crucial time. “Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons,” the release stated. “By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.”
Over the past 21 years, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected over one billion pounds of food and has fed an estimated 30 million people.
