Community members in Huntington have rallied to support at least 12 locals who are battling cancer. Huntington’s “Cancer Flush Out” activities span the next 8 months, with events from a dinner, bake sale, yard sale, auction, and 5K run on April 16, to a golf tournament in October at Millsite Golf Course. All of the proceeds from these events will be divided among those who are fighting various forms of cancer at this time.
“We know of 12 people who are receiving cancer treatments right now,” revealed Julie Jones, Huntington City Councilperson and an organizer of the events. She invited people from the surrounding communities to support the event by making donations and attending the dinner on April 16.В Organizers see it as a way to “help our friends win the battle.”
Ruth Ann Ekker, another of the event’s organizers, explained that it started with the idea to try to hold a benefit for a couple of people, and soon grew to include more as they realized how many were really suffering. “When we realized that we had so many in Huntington and Lawrence, we knew we had to pull the whole community together,” she said.
Saturday, April 9, is the kick-off with a Zumbathon at at Canyon View Jr. High from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Then, the BBQ Pork Dinner, bake sale, auction, yard sale, and 5K run will be held the next Saturday, April 16, also at Canyon View. The dinner will begin at 5 p.m. and will be $8 a plate, or $6 for seniors and children under 6. July will bring a special concert in the park, a skeet shoot-out and softball tournament are planned for the summer, and the golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 9.
Many Huntington businesses are already involved in sponsoring the “Cancer Flush Out”, including Hometown Market, Utah Power & Light Credit Union, Zion’s Bank, Desertview Credit Union, and Desert Edge Christian Chapel.
