Coming off a state championship last year, Helper American Legion started the season off strong Monday with a 11-3 win over Price at Carbon High School.
Helper led 10-1 midway through the fourth inning.
“I thought we played a pretty decent game for our first game of the season,” said Helper Manager Jeff Cisneros. “I was pleased getting the win and it was a good way to get the 2014 season underway.”
Kyler Nelson picked up the win for Helper. The Grand High School standout gave up just one unearned run. Nelson went three innings for the win. Jarod Lessar pitched the next three, and gave up two runs. Ridge Nielson pitched the seventh. Price’s Caden Sherman threw three innings and gave up seven runs and was credited with the loss.
Of Helper’s six hits, four were doubles. Bryce Blackburn, who played this season for USU Eastern, had two doubles in the game. Dominic Rondinelli, Jarod Lessar and Colton Greener notched doubles as well.
Price matched Helper with six hits. Brayden “Jeter” Tubbs had the lone extra base hit for Price with a double.
Helper’s Wednesday night home opener against Murray has been canceled. A double header will now be played July 9 in Helper at 5 and 7 p.m. Helper will play their home opener Monday against Judge. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
Price will travel to take on Judge Wednesday before the Green River Invitational this weekend.
