Investigators determined Sunday’s garage fire at 64 West 200 South in Huntington began when a vehicle the family was working on backfired.
The fire quickly engulfed the garage and caused damage to multiple vehicles. It also caused substantial damage to the family’s nearby home.
Fire crews from Huntington and four other towns teamed up to contain the blaze.
Huntington City rarely gets called out on structure fires.
“We get called out once or twice a year for structure fires, but without records I cannot say for sure,” Fire Chief Pete Alger said. “During the summer we usually get called out on brush fires, and in the winter we see a lot of chimney fires.”
