Carbon County Commissioners hosted a special public meeting Tuesday to discuss possibly creating a protest letter aimed at the BLM.

Land closures and new gates on the plateau northeast of East Carbon prompted the discussion.

Commissioners were concerned that the only notice BLM officials provided was placed in the public register where the BLM failed to provide notice of educational bodies.

They were also concerned that the closure process did not follow state law by disregarding Carbon County’s status as a cooperating agency and that the BLM committed a procedural violation by ignoring the established rights of the County and local citizens.

Commissioner John Jones said, “At no time did this commission vote in a public setting to close those roads.”

Because the roads were designated as “Class D,” they are recognized as County roads, which should give citizens a voice in the closings.

A motion to sign and send the letter passed unanimously.
