Helper Falls Short to St. George, Still in the Running for State Title

The Helper American Legion baseball team hoped to seal a second straight state title Thursday night, but fell short of that goal as they were defeated by St. George, 8-0. Despite the loss, Helper has one final shot at capturing the championship in a do-or-die game Friday evening in Logan.

Because the state tournament is double elimination, Helper will face St. George once again, with everything on the line. “We hope to play better today,” stated Helper manager Jeff Cisneros. “We didn’t play very well on Thursday. We had four errors with only three hits. It’s hard to win a ball game with numbers like that.”

Errors early on set the tone for the rest of the game. Cisneros believes the players know what needs to be done and will step up to the challenge.

“We had a lot of people come out to support us,” the manager explained. “We are thankful for everyone who came and hopefully we will do better tonight.”

The state championship game will take place at 6 p.m. Friday evening at Logan High School.
