Dakota Cisneros and Dalton Nelson teamed up to lead the “White” squad to victory over the “Blue” in Carbon High School’s annual Blue and White scrimmage Friday.

The pair combined for all of the 16 points scored in the game. Perhaps more importantly, the team was able to implement its new spread offense in competitive conditions, and no players were hurt.

“Any time you can come into a scrimmage game, everyone comes out of it healthy, and you see some good things out on the field, you always feel good about it,” said Head Coach Jeff Blanc. “I think we’re going to make a turn for the better with the Carbon Football team.”

The White Team jumped out to a lead in the first quarter when Nelson took a hand-off from his quarterback Cisneros and ran wide to the right to score the game’s first touchdown. Cisneros capped the score off with a run of his own to score on the two-point attempt.

The second and third quarters were a battle of field position between the Blue and White squads. Neither team put up any points despite two field-goal attempts. Then, with less than a minute left in the game, Cisneros kept the ball and punched it in with a tough two-yard score.

Cisneros’ running mate, Nelson, then repaid his Quarterback with a successful two-point attempt of his own, which brought the final score to 16-0.

Blanc was pleased with his team, saying the “overall effort” was what he had hoped for from a team that is hardworking both on and off the field.

“We have a standout team not only on the field, but off the field,” Blanc said. “I am very proud of the hard work our players have put in. We have some kids who are dedicated to our program, who have bought into it. They are doing what is best for the team.”

The crowd who attended the game was treated not only to the excitement of seeing this year’s starters, but also to the poised play of the younger players on the team. The Coach was excited to see the freshmen and sophomores play so well.

“We have 16 freshmen on our team this year,” he said. “I feel really good about our team, with the direction it’s going. We have a coaching staff who cares about our players, and a good atmosphere.”

Carbon’s first game will be this Friday at 7 p.m. against 1A Powerhouse Monticello, and the team’s first goal is to win that game. Only after that, said Coach Blanc, will they work on their overall goal of making the playoffs.
