Mule deer breed from early November through early December. That’s why Brent Stettler has chosen Nov. 19 as the day to hold his first mule deer watch in southeastern Utah.
“During the rut, which will be in full swing, deer tend to be less concerned about vehicles and people,” says Stettler, a regional conservation outreach manager with the Division of Wildlife Resources.
Because they’re mostly interested in вЂthe ladies,’ Stettler says the bucks will be less wary. “If you attend the event,” he says, “you should be able to get a close look at the deer.”
2 p.m. on Nov. 19
The free viewing event will happen Nov. 19 at the Nash Wash Wildlife Management Area in southeastern Utah.
If you’d like to attend, meet at 2 p.m. at Exit 202 (the exit to Cisco) on Interstate 70.
Stettler encourages you to bring a pair of binoculars, a camera, snacks, water and warm clothes. “And please be on time,” he says.
Stettler also encourages you to carpool to reduce the number of vehicles in the caravan. “We’ll also provide two large passenger 4WD vehicles for the event, which will end at dark,” he says.

How to get there
The exit to Cisco — Exit 202 — is on I-70 just west of the Colorado, Utah border.
If you’re traveling from Salt Lake City, it will take about four hours to reach the exit.
To reach the Cisco exit, travel south on Interstate 15 to Exit 261 (the Price exit), which is just south of Springville.В Then travel southeast on U.S. Highway 6 past Price and on to its junction with I-70.В Then travel east on I-70 to Exit 202 (the Cisco exit).
Drive time from Price to Cisco is about two hours.
If you’re traveling from Moab, it will take about an hour to reach the Cisco exit.
To reach the exit, take State Road 128 in a northeast direction along the Colorado River to Cisco. Meet at Exit 202.
