In a game that provided everything one would expect in a Carbon-Emery rivalry, sophomore Lindsey Blanc scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high tying eight boards for the Lady Dinos in a 58-51 win in Castle Dale on Tuesday.
Ashton Bell quickly got the Spartans out to a 2-0 lead on the team’s second possession, but the Lady Dinos responded with a 9-0 run thanks in part to seven Blanc points during that stretch. A high scoring first quarter saw Carbon take a 19-14 lead.
The Dinos led by as many as nine in the second quarter, but a 12-2 run by the Lady Spartans, capped off by an Emily Olsen three pointer, spanning the middle portion of the second quarter gave Emery its first lead, 26-25, since the opening minute of the game. Carbon’s Taylor Oliver hit a three at the end of the half to push the Dinos past the Spartans for a 32-30 halftime lead.
With the score 34-33 in favor of Carbon midway through the third, Blanc nailed a corner jumper and on the ensuing inbounds for Emery, picked off the pass and scored another layup and was fouled in the process. Blanc added the free throw and would spur Carbon to a 10-point lead during the quarter.
The Lady Spartans would get within three points of Carbon, 50-47, on free throws by Bailey Rasmussen with two minutes remaining in the game, but Emery would get no closer. Oliver iced the game with two free throws with eight seconds left to spur Carbon to the win.
Oliver scored a career-high 12 points in the game. Beth Child chipped in eight points and eight rebounds. Sophomore McKenna Sorensen also notched a career best in the game, pouring in eight points and grabbing five rebounds off the bench. Jordan Scoggins finished with nine points.
Emery (4-3, 0-0 Region 15) will not play until a Jan. 6 matchup at Beaver. Carbon (7-4, 0-0 Region 12) will take on Juan Diego in Draper on Jan. 8. Carbon upset a heavily favored Juan Diego team in the first round of last year’s 3A playoffs.
