Four citizens applied for the mid-term vacancy on the Huntington City Council. This vacancy was created when former councilman Leonard Norton became the new mayor for Huntington following the passing of former mayor Lamar Guymon. Gerald Livingston, David Emery, Dan Hunter and Tom Kay were the candidates interviewed by the current council members.

All four candidates were asked the same questions posed by the different council members. Following the interview process, each council member voted and the voting was unanimous. City recorder Janene Hansen issued the oath of office to Gerald Livingston on Wednesday evening during the city’s council meeting. He will hold this position until Dec. 31, 2019, at which time an election will determine council positions.

Each candidate and present councilmen voiced their strong feelings about the city and how positive things are in Huntington.

Next, two resolutions had inadvertently been given the same number, so one had to be changed and the council voted in favor of the change. The resolution change deals with the charge for copies made at the city and will now be number 16-2018 instead of 14-2018.

Requests for links to Huntington City’s website were discussed. The council was cautioned about this process and they will take a look at it before any decision is made.

Mayor Norton reported that Courtney Justice has agreed to help with the Huntington Youth City Council. This program will become more active and a council member will be appointed in January to help further the youth group. Mayor Norton also reported to the council that new assignments would be made in January for each members.

Effective in 2020, renewal of permanent business licenses will have new requirements and penalties for late payments will increase. If licenses are not paid by Jan. 15, the late penalty will increase from 10% to 20% and then to 50% if not paid by Feb. 15.

Councilman Oveson requested that council review Title 5 of their code and be ready to discuss changes at the next meeting. This will aid the process of finding a new fire chief for the city.

Finally, all council members issued a big thank you to the city employees and volunteers for making Huntington such a great place to live.
