Just before 1 p.m. Thursday emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene of a one-vehicle accident near mile marker 225 on Highway 6.

According to Cpl. Todd Johnson of the Utah Highway Patrol, the driver of the westbound white Chevy Astrovan, 65-year-old Jerry Stinson of Layton, fell asleep behind the wheel.

The van was pulling a small utility trailer. The vehicle and trailer drifted across the lane of on-coming traffic, hit a culvert, bounced through it and went head-on into the mountainside.

The crash sent Stinson and three other passengers, a 34-year-old female and two children, ages 10 and 4, to Castleview Hospital in Price with minor injuries.

Utah Highway Patrol, Helper Police, Helper Rescue Engine 3, Carbon County Sheriff’s Department and Carbon County Ambulance were all present on the scene.

Cpl. Johnson said that no citations have been issued at this time.
