While continuing on in both region and nonregion action, the Green River Pirates have faced off against Monticello as well as Grand in an attempt to add a victory to their books.

Green River opened the faceoff putting up a low two points, while Monticello responded with 22 of its own. Green River exploded in the second, managing a game-high 20, but still ended the second lagging behind 12 points. Monticello continued to dominate en route to the overall Region 19 victory.

Looking to secure a nonregion victory, Green River faced off against Grand on Tuesday, but were handed a 55-41 loss.

Grand grabbed an early lead in the first, finishing 15-11 and never letting it go. Green River managed a game-high 18 in the fourth.

Maribel Escalante led her team in Saturday’s match, netting 15 points and three three-pointers throughout the night. Kambre Brewer was right behind, sinking 13 and a single three-point shot. Daniela Mendez grabbed nine points and a three-pointer for Green River.

The boys’ basketball team took its turn against Monticello as well, suffering a 67-29 defeat on Tuesday. Monticello opened the faceoff by putting up 12 while the Pirates responded with a game-high nine. The Buckaroos continued to dominate play, netting 22 in the third before ending the game in their favor.

Green River’s Trey Vetere was the sole Pirate in double figures, netting three three-pointers to put up 11. Teammates Axel Avila, Jacob Cox and Preston Marshall also each managed a three-point shot for Green River as well.

Green River’s next chance at victory will come on Friday as both teams travel to Monument Valley to take on the Cougars.
