Continuing in Region 19 action, the Green River boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled on Friday to take on the Monument Valley Cougars with the boys continuing on to faceoff against Grand Tuesday.
The girls’ team fought hard but ended up taking a loss 53-48 at the hands of the host team.
Monument Valley started off strong, putting up 15 compared to Green River’s 10 in the first. The Cougars continued to dominate and ended the second leading by six points. Both teams put up a low nine in the third and Green River managed a game-high 15 in the fourth before giving up the match.
Junior Maribel Escalante led her team in scoring, sinking five threes and a total of 18 for the Lady Pirates. Teammate Daniela Mendez came behind, pouring in 13 with a single three while fellow Lady Pirate Savannah Williams managed 12.
The boys’ teams dug deep to blow past the hosting team, finishing off Tuesday’s match with a 64-58 win for the Pirates.
Tuesday, however, was a different note for Green River, with the boys falling behind early in the first and continuing their lag before giving up the victory 77-54.
The Lady Pirates’ next chance at a victory will come Wednesdat as they travel to Pinnacle while the boys will take a break before hosting Whitehorse on Friday. The girls’ team will also make an appearance to start the weekend.
