Emery County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

Last week, the Emery County Sheriff’s Office was honored to host Kimberly Schlau who delivered a powerful message about the dangers of distracted driving.

Schlau presented at Green River High School, Emery High School, and the Huntington and Hunter Power Plants. She also held a special evening session for law enforcement and their spouses.

In 2007, Schlau’s daughters, Jessica and Kelli Uhl, were killed by a speeding Illinois State Trooper when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed the median, driving into the girls’ car and killing them instantly. Investigation showed that while traveling at speeds over 120 mph, the trooper was also on his cell phone and his vehicle laptop computer.

Since that time, Schlau has traveled across the country speaking at police academies, law enforcement conferences and departments as well as high schools and businesses. Kim talked about the WIN concept – – – What’s Important Now.

“Is it really that important that you answer that call or that text while driving?” Schlau asked. “Probably not.”

Statistics show that distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents, injury and death. Schlau has devoted herself to talking about her daughters and the circumstances of their deaths in an effort to prevent this tragedy from happening to other families.  As the UHP says, “DON’T DRIVE STUPID.”

Thank you Schlau for coming to Emery County to share your message!
