An exciting exhibition is coming to USU Eastern’s Gallery East. This exhibition, entitled “The Poetry of Survival,” comes from the artistic duo Anne Kaferle and Kadi Franson.

“The Poetry of Survival “showcases the work of the duo, who are both residents of Utah. Franson participated in an artist residency in Helper in the spring. As a part of the residency, they did an exhibition that coincided with the monthly First Friday event. During this, Gallery Director Jason Huntzinger was impressed by Franson’s work and thought she would be a good pairing with Kaferle for a future show.

Huntzinger then reached out to both to see if they were interested. Franson stated that she has never shown at the gallery before and excited to be doing so, remarking that it looks beautiful.

“We are going to giving an artist talk as a part of the opening,” Franson informed.

She continued by stating that they are hoping to really get the community to come out and join the exhibition. The artists focus on the fragility of the life of those in the Anthropocene through the lens of the geologic time. Kaferle’s paintings work to depict the movement of sediment by way of a medium that drips, crumbles and collects in pools on the canvas.

Franson’s drawing series, titled “Choke Stones,” is credited to being inspired by the rocks that become lodged in suspension with slot canyons. To Franson, the focal stones suggest a contemplation on themes such as passage, blockage and balance.

Together, these artists bring a beautiful rendition and presentation on life and the many ways that it is survived, fought through and triumphed over. The opening reception is slated to begin at 5 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. on Oct. 5. Those that are eager to hear the artist discussion should plan on being at the gallery at 6 p.m.
