Pam Cha, USU Eastern professor and local resident, stood in front of the Carbon County commissioners on Tuesday afternoon and presented them with the news that the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church will be turning 100 this year.

Along with that news, Cha informed the commissioners and other attendees that the church will be playing host to a celebration of its 100th year. The anniversary party, taking place the weekend of August 19 to August 21, is a once in a lifetime kind of event and they are hard at work trying to make it special. The anniversary will be a three-day event, which will take place largely in the pavilion at the church.

A golf tournament is scheduled for that Friday (August 19) and will hopefully draw a large crowd. There is also a historic tour of places like Kenilworth on Saturday. The event will coincidentally take place on the weekend of the Helper Arts Festival and they are working on getting people excited for that as well. Three different hotels have already been contacted about the event and are willing to host events and give rates for rooms.

The main event of the anniversary celebration is a dinner that will be held at the Carbon County Event Center, catered by Sam Farlaino. Cha pointed out that a lot of visitors will be coming back to be a part of this event and will bring a lot of revenue to the county. Cha then requested that, due to the church being a non-profit, the fees be waived by the commissioners.

“People coming back and seeing good things about our county is really a positive for us,” Cha stated.

In place of completely waiving the fees for the event, Commissioner Jake Mellor proposed that the money be taken from the Travel and Tourism Board. Frank Ori informed the commissioners that a fee of $500 was agreed upon. It was decided by the commissioners that, budget allowing, the money for the event will come from the board recommended by Commissioner Mellor.
