USDA Forest Service Press Release

Price, UT, July 11, 2024 – Fire officials from the Manti-La Sal National Forest continue to engage in wildfire suppression and management efforts on the Babylon Fire, which has reached approximately 250 acres.

Morning operations saw minimal fire behavior, with slow creeping and smoldering in most areas. Afternoon saw an increase in fire activity, and air support was utilized to reduce heat and some isolated torching. The fire continues to create a favorable patch-mosaic pattern across the burn-area.

Initially, special consideration was given to the sensitive management of the area, while simultaneously utilizing fire for natural resources benefit to increase forest health. The fire assisted in opening the forest canopy, allowing new growth of vegetation and aspen regeneration. Now that all objectives have been favorably met, the Babylon Fire is in full suppression. Crews will monitor, patrol, and hold the line for the foreseeable future.

This incident is currently receiving support from one Type 1 hotshot crew, two Type 2 initial attack crews, one engine, and air support as needed.

Smoke is visible within Blanding, UT and across San Juan County. Please do not report. For public and firefighter safety, the public is asked to avoid the impacted areas.

The Babylon Fire was reported on Friday, July 5, 2024, near Steamboat Point on the Monticello Ranger District, located west of Blanding, UT in San Juan County.

There are currently no fire restrictions on the Manti-La Sal National Forest, however, dry conditions will continue throughout the area with increased temperatures. As a reminder, practice appropriate fire safety measures while traveling and recreating outdoors.
