The only thing standing in the way of a perfect season for Emery and back-to-back state titles was Grantsville. The teams faced off in the 3A State Championship game on Saturday evening at the Sevier Valley Center.

Megan Jensen left her mark on the game early and often. The Lady Spartans were tough on defense and never let Grantsville get comfortable. Emery ended the game with 11 steals and forced 18 Cowboy turnovers. Morgan Hurdsman shutdown Grantsville’s best player, Ashlee Edwards, and held her to just two points.

The Lady Spartans had a 26-14 lead at halftime and were clearly the more talented team, as they have shown throughout the year. Megan Jensen had 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks in the first half alone.

Emery cruised to a 59-31 victory over a very good Grantsville team. With the win, the Lady Spartans completed their perfect season, 25-0, pushed their winning streak to 40 and won back-to-back state titles.

Jensen ended the game with 26 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Kinlee Toomer recorded a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Kacelyn Toomer added 10 points with seven assists to go along with five rebounds. Hurdsman ended the game with three steals but her full defensive effort will not show up on any stat sheet. The same could be said about Bailey Huggard, Ambree Bennett and Kiri Cook also played valuable minutes for Emery.

When the final buzzer went off, the Emery faithful rushed the court to join the champs. They all started chanting “back-to-back” before Emery cut down the nets. The championship capped off an incredible year for a perfect team.

Congratulations to the back-to-back state champions!
