The Emery Sparks seventh grade girls’ traveling basketball team served breakfast with Santa on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Emery boys’ fifth grade team competed in a tournament against teams from surrounding areas.
A skills challenge also took place following breakfast. This was for individuals of all ages and included shooting and dribbling challenges. Prizes, donated from the Emery Country Travel Bureau, were given to the winners in each division.
Next weekend, on Saturday, Dec. 10, the Emery boys will Brunch with the Grinch while the Emery Sparks will compete in a tournament. This will be hosted at Canyon View Middle School.
“The December basketball tournaments are organized to give local youth an opportunity to develop and hone skills at home in their own community,” said coach Brandi Truman. “Bringing athletes in from surrounding towns is a win for our community and our athletes as they meet and compete against players they will see in coming years.”
The tournaments are designed as fundraisers to help traveling teams meet ongoing costs. These young athletes are also teaming up with Emery High School basketball players, who help referee the games while developing relationships between current and future Spartans.
