Orangeville resident MarKette Tanner was crowned Miss Emery County 2012 July 7 and now comes the work involved in such aВ prestigiousВ award.

Tanner took the crown from McCall Spears, Miss Emery County 2011. Tanner’s platform in entitled Operation Smile.

According to its website, Operation Smile is one of the top charities providing much needed surgical services. Since 1982, Operation Smile, through the help of dedicated medical volunteers, has provided more than two million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities.

“I chose to help Operation Smile as my platform because I strongly believe in the long-lasting result of what they are doing,” Tanner said. “It is a miracle and blessing for people all over the world.”

Tanner will visit schools around Emery County to educate students and teachers about the program. She hopes to raise money to provide medical volunteers with supplies for surgeries and also hopes she will be able to accompany the organization on a service trip during the upcoming year. Tanner will be working on “smile kits” for the organization while providing other service in the community.

“I would like to be as involved as possible throughout the year,” she said.

Tanner’s immediate plans include attending rodeos, parades, the Emery County Fair, among other events.

“I want to attend each of these events for a few different reasons,” she said. “First, I want to support the community and help in any way possible. Second, I want to to show the amazing people in Emery County that I will represent them in the best way I can. And third, I love to have fun!”

Tanner also wishes to touch the lives of the youth in the area.

“I desire to be a positive role model for all the youth of the county and do what I can to inspire В them to set high personalВ achievementВ goals and reach for their dreams,” she said. “I want to be a cheerful and happy face for Emery County throughout the great state of Utah.”

So far so good, according to Tanner.

“I am very excited to be Miss Emery and am excited for what this year will bring,” she explained. “I know that I will do a great job because I will be dedicated and determined in everything I do. I am very grateful for this chance and will do all that I can to represent this community and make Emery County proud.”

Tanner will participate in the Miss Utah Pageant in October.
