At 10:30 Tuesday morning, Carbon County emergency crews were dispatched to a fire in the Nine Mile Canyon area. The Bill Barrett Corporation now comments on the situation.

Wellington fire and rescue were first to arrive on the scene. В  They immediately called for back-up when it was obvious the Dry Canyon natural gas compressor facility was on fire, as well as other surrounding structures.

Two Bill Barrett employees, ages 28 and 62, were transported to the University of Utah burn unit with severe injuries. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

Jim Felton, Communications Manager for Bill Barrett Corporation, reported the fire was fully contained as of 1p.m. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

“This situation will be thoroughly investigated by not only our insurance, but OSHA and state authorities,” Felton said.

Felton is located in Denver, CO and said he was receiving information as fast as he could regarding the В incident, but for now there doesn’t seem to be any signs of environmental spills. All gas wells near the site have been shut in, and all personnel accounted for. For the time being Felton doesn’t know when the fire will be fully extinguished, but said when dealing with hydrocarbon fires, it’s sometimes best to let them burn.

“We are doing our best to take care of those injured and keep the site contained,” Felton said.
