BLM Press Release
The mechanical work for the Horse Canyon Prescribed Fire Project was completed a few years ago which included thinning pinyon/juniper trees with hand crews and mechanical shredding (bullhog). We have been waiting for a good weather opportunity to burn the remaining 176 acres of piles that were left over from the hand crew thinning with chainsaws. With the incoming storm system on the way this provided us with the needed weather variables to achieve our prescribed fire objectives. We hope to have the 176 acres wrapped up in the next couple of days. Smoke may linger in the area for several days after primary ignition as the piles are slowly consumed by the smoldering phase.
