A bomb detonation had many Carbon County residents questioning the source of the noise on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, the Utah Bomb Squad was helping to eliminate a portion of a cliff that had experience undercutting, leaving it vulnerable to collapse. The portion of the cliff was near the Carbon Country Club on Highway 6.
“Left unmitigated, there is significant potential of the cliff falling on its own, leaving havoc in its wake,” the sheriff’s office shared prior to the detonation. “This mass has extreme potential of damaging critical infrastructure in our county, including canals and watersheds.”
As part of the federal grant funding received from the National Recourse Conservation Service (NRCS), Carbon County has been working diligently to improve flood control by restoring capacity to the Price River and repairing output controls, according to the sheriff’s office. This work by the Utah Bomb Squad was funded by this grant.
Due to possible debris from the blast, traffic was temporarily stopped at the Consumers exit, Price River Bridge on ramp and the Spring Glen exit for approximately 10 minutes.
Drone footage of the blast can be seen on the Carbon County Sheriff’s Facebook page.
