Carbon School District Press Release
Each year the Utah State Board of Education identifies some categories the Title 1 schools in the state fall into, based on performance. They have three categories which are reward, focus and priority schools. The lowest performing schools make up about five percent of the schools, and the next 10 percent are called focus schools. The very best performing schools are the ones that get the reward designation.
Bruin Point Elementary, in East Carbon, was recently named a reward school.
“The teachers and staff at Bruin Point are extremely focused on student learning,” said Stacy Basinger who was the principal at the school last year and is now heading up the staff at Wellington Elementary. “Instruction and support services are offered to fill gaps and increase confidence in all students.”
The determination of the level schools were placed at were made by using the two-year averages for the 2014 and 2015 SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth in Education. High Performing Title I schools are schools that achieved the highest levels of student proficiency and those that achieved high levels of student growth. These schools status are not set by a pre-determined percentage, but are the ones with the highest performance in the state.
The Title One designation for schools is made based on socio-economic demographics that qualify schools for supplemental federal funding. For the 2015 – 2016 school year, 326 schools in Utah are receiving Title I funds.
Bruin Point is a small school and that affords a lot of opportunities that some other schools may not have.
“The faculty and staff at Bruin Point have a unique situation in that they have the opportunity to know all students in all grade levels. The staff works closely together which creates a strong school community, which in turn supports strong relationships with families and students,” concluded Basinger.
