Business Spotlight: Had A Cake Bakery

Jennifer Lee Maddox has been baking since she was young, joining her family in the kitchen to whip up delicious treats. Now, she has combined her love for art and baking to form a successful business that has been in operation for three years.

“I was an art major in college,” Maddox explained. “Art was my inspiration and then baking was my second love. I found a way to combine the two. It is a delicate art because I try to pay so much attention to the detail.”

After creating a cake for a friend’s wedding, Maddox was encouraged by friends and family to expand her horizons and take a shot at starting a business featuring her treats. That’s when HAD a Cake Bakery was born. Customers can choose from cakes, cookies, cupcakes, fudge, baklava and more, all created by the one-woman show.

“Pretty much if you want it made, I will find a way to make it,” Maddox said. “I am an outside-of-the-box thinker.”

Everything Maddox creates, from fondant to figurines, is edible and is made from scratch in her home that she shares with three children and her husband of 23 years. Cake flavors include vanilla, chocolate, marble, white, spice, carrot and red velvet. Each cake is also accompanied by a filling. Customers can choose from Bavarian cream, chocolate cream, strawberry cream, salted caramel, whipped cheesecake, banana cream, cookies and cream, and butterscotch cream. Buttercream frosting then covers each cake before edible fondant brings each creation to life.

While Maddox keeps busy with orders for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, graduations and more, she does not keep any ingredients on hand. Instead, she recommends placing an order at least two weeks before an event to ensure she has the time to purchase the freshest ingredients and any special supplies. Maddox also creates smash cakes for first birthdays where she bakes the cake and takes the photos for a flat rate of $75.

Creations from HAD a Cake Bakery are custom made and custom priced depending on the size, scale and time spent making the treat, but Maddox does aim to be accommodating for every budget. In addition, she will deliver for free within Price and Helper. She will also deliver to surrounding areas in Carbon and Emery counties for a small fee.
