Canvas Election Results for Helper and East Carbon Released

The mayors and an assortment of council members for both Helper City and East Carbon gathered at the Carbon County Clerk/Auditor’s office on Thursday afternoon for a special meeting.

This meeting presented the canvas election results from the Aug. 13 primary elections. For Helper City, there are three council member positions available. The top votes were for Gary Harwood with 221 while current councilwoman Amanda Wheeler was second with 205. Michelle Goldsmith received 166, David Dornan received 154, Nathan Behn received 73, Jason L. Riffe received 47 and Darren Cloward rounded out the votes with 23. Of these, all but Cloward will advance to the general election in November, where voters will be able to vote for their top three candidates.

For the position of Mayor of East Carbon, current Mayor David F. Avery received the most votes with 208. Following was Barbara J. Robinett with 119, Orlando La Fontaine with 66 and Keityn Allen Hunt with 46. Avery and Robinett will now advance to the general election in the race for mayor.

There are also three positions on the council of East Carbon and the votes came in as follows: Liz Ferguson, 131, Karla C. Young, 142, Charles Abeyta, 202, Jesse C. Stewart, 135, Susan Laborde, 115, Jennifer N. Maestas, 92, Bob Martinez, 134, Bryan Mena, 114, Cheralee England-Johns, 8, Jason Jorgensen, 119, and Moriah Jones, 25. Of these, Ferguson, Young, Abeyta, Stewart, Martinez and Jorgensen will be on the ballot in November. Voters will be able to select three candidates.
