The Carbon Dinos are moving on in the 3A tournament behind some clutch pitching while high expectations were squashed as the Emery baseball and softball teams were sent home after losing in consolation games.

Winners of two-straight games to end the season, the Dinos went into the 3A baseball tournament as a disappointing four seed. But with wins over Stansbury and Park City, Carbon finds itself on a collision course with No. 1 seed Spanish Fork Thursday. The Dons have nipped the Dinos twice so far this season by a combined score of 9-3. The game will take place at Kearns High School at 1:30 p.m.

The Spartans ripped off three-straight games to open the 2A tournament with wins over Kanab, American Leadership, and Millard. Then came a matchup with eventual champion Gunnison. Emery’s bats went cold and the Bulldogs advanced with a 2-0 win.

Now in the consolation bracket, the Spartans then fell to Richfield 9-5. Richfield went on to play Gunnison in the championship game in which the Bulldogs won 6-4. Emery finished the season 16-9 and 8-2 in Region 15 play.

The Lady Spartans entered the tournament on a three-game losing streak and Millard High made it four as the Eagles won the opening-round matchup. Emery then squared off against Kanab later that day and beat the Cowboys 9-2. Thursday’s win was short lived, though, as the Lady Spartans were then shutout 2-0 Friday against Gunnison.

Emery concluded the season with a 16-9 record, including a 6-2 mark in region play.
