One of the opening issues on the agenda for the Carbon County Commission meeting that took place on Wednesday evening was a public hearing for the consideration to re-open the 2017 budget and make proposed amendments to budget for all funds.
To begin this process, Commissioner Jae Potter did a quick review of the budget and the amendments that would be made. County Clerk/Auditor Seth Oveson was excused from the meeting due to presenting at a conference. Potter stated that one of the most important parts of the summary sheet would be the bottom line, which explains that at the first of the year the original budget that was approved for 2017 was dramatically different.
The revenue line was at $32,420,000 while the expense line was at $39 million. This means that there was a $6 million difference in the budget using the balance out of the reserves. An amendment was previously conducted in February to correct some of the changes. There have been new shrinks and cuts to try and make the budget even more efficient.
Commissioner Potter stated that there would be copies available of the entire budget, which would be posted online after the meeting as well. Potter did show all of the areas in which cuts were being made, informing everyone that the total of the budget cuts reached nearly $4 million.
The justice court alone had a $22,000 change, which had already been discussed previously. The attorney’s office is also facing a $15,000 change. Once the budget had been broken down sufficiently, Commissioner Potter then requested that anyone that had any questions or comments on the budget to please speak up. However, nobody in attendance felt the need and the hearing was closed.
The review and adoption of the amendments to the county budget for 2017 was approved by the commissioners. To view the most up-to-date budget information, please click here.
