The Carbon County Commission meeting took place on Wednesday evening. At the meeting, the commissioners spoke on different subjects that have recently come to light that could improve the county.

Commissioner Casey Hopes presented an upcoming project. Around a year ago, UDOT conducted a high road assessment and found areas on Ridge Road that had some problems. Although it is unable to do paving on the road, guard rails, rumble strips and intersection changing can be added to increase the safety of the road. With this project, the commissioners will meet a 25% match of the total cost, which is $375,000. Hopes stated that the money could be pulled out of the class B and C road funds. The agreement for the project was approved by commissioners.

Next, the commissioners discussed the approval to establish the Carbon County Public Land Corner Preservation Fund. This fund works with locating and marking land section corners, making them precise and accurate. The state grants a significant amount for this fund. Ben Grimes has proposed an action that will be allowed by the state statute where an additional fee will be charged for items that are to be filed with the county surveyor, such as maps and road dedication documents. Currently, the surveyor does not charge a filing fee for these documents. This new proposal allows a $5 fee to be charged for documents that will be retained by the office of the county surveyor. By posing the minimal fee, it will create a fund that is to be shared with the amount that the state will provide for locating and preserving corner monuments.

“As we grow in our county and help people with our boundary lines, we can help to make sure we have less problems in the future,” stated Commissioner Jake Mellor.
