Carbon County Commissioners Wrap Up 2017 Business

As the 2017 year draws to a close, the Carbon County Commissioners hosted their final commission meeting of the year on Wednesday. This meeting assisted in closing a lot of topics that were looked over throughout the year.

The first is a lease agreement for the new Seventh District Courthouse building between Carbon County and the Administrative Office of the Courts. The lease payment will be equal to the amount of the bond, which means that no amount will be coming out of the county’s general fund. The Administrative Office has requested an option to purchase the building.

Carbon County Attorney Christian Bryner discussed this with the commissioners, expressing concern that there does not seem to be a set end-date for the option to purchase. He stated that if the decision is made to grant the request, there should be an expiration date included. Another concern Bryner had was that there be some language expressing that if they wish to purchase the building, all of the cleaning and maintenance will be up to the Administrative Office.

The commissioners agreed with Bryner on the revisions that will have to be made on the lease agreement. The commissioners then approved the 2017 amended budget as well as the 2018 budget. Each of these budgets were presented to the community in past public hearings. One of the final subjects that the commissioners tackled for the evening was the review and possible approval of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Emery and Grand Counties for the Southeastern Utah Health Department.

The commissioners reviewed what the MOU would entail in a previous commission meeting. However, they did not have the language on the agenda to make a decision at that time. At that point, the commissioners approved the MOU and will continue to work toward an interlocal agreement.

The Commission Chair was rotated from Commissioner Jae Potter to Commissioner Casey Hopes during the meeting as well.
