As a result of the efforts by a community coalition organized by the Southeast Utah Health Department, community partnerships and local residents, Carbon County has been recognized as the county with the highest seatbelt usage in the state of Utah.
The coalition was recognized for its work in Carbon County by the Utah Department of Public Safety on Thursday. Keri Gibson, Terry Smith and Heather Fuhr traveled to Price to present a plaque during a celebration lunch at the health department.
According to studies, Carbon County was second lowest in the state at 51 percent seat belt usage in 2014. As of July 16, Carbon County is number one in the state at 94.8 percent of the population belted. This was achieved through community partnerships with the Southeastern Utah Health Department, Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Price City Police Department, Helper City Police Department, Banasky Insurance, ETV News, Nelco Contractors, Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Department of Public Safety.
For the upcoming year, the coalition plans to continue strengthening community partnerships and aims to keeps its #1 title. Members of the coalition will also organize a distracted driving training with local high school students and prepare for the “Every 15 Minutes” presentation the following school year.
