Carbon High team
Carbon and Emery traveled to Moab this past weekend to compete in the Red Rocks Invitational. Many of these athletes were competing in events for the first time this spring as snow has kept the two high school teams indoors.
The Lady Dinos visited the podium early and often on Saturday. Megan Swasey won the 100 meter hurdles and took second in the long jump while Makenna Blanc took second in the 800 meters. Emma Haddock, Grace Broadbear and freshman Lyndee Mower placed third in the 3200, 1600 and 100, respectively, for Carbon. The Lady Dinos also won the 4×100 relay. Emery Spartans McKenzie Cox had a second place finished in the discus.
Castle Country athletes dominated the girls’ high jump. Carbon Dino Emma Christensen took first followed by freshman Haylee Prescott (CHS) in second and Whitley Christensen (EHS) in third. Harley Migliori (CHS) and Jodi Noyes (CHS) then took second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Marianna Molinar (CHS) won the javelin ahead of Kylie Madsen (CHS) who took third. The Lady Dinos finished on top in the girls’ division with a 200 point score, a full 50 points ahead of anyone else. Emery ended in fifth.
Bryar Meccariello (EHS) edged out Jared Spendlove (CHS) in the boys’ 800 meter to take first with Spendlove in second. Spendlove also took third in the 1600 meter. Cale Allred (EHS) won the javelin throw over Michael Banasky (CHS) who set a personal record while taking second. Carson Frame (CHS) ended in first in the long jump while Mason Faimalo (EHS) took second in the high jump. Treven Brazier and Cale Allred reached the podium for the Spartans with a third place finish in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, respectively. Marquies Giroux (EHS) placed second in the discus and third in the shot put while Jaylon Dennis (CHS) also placed third in the 100 meter. Carbon finished the day in third just ahead of Emery in fourth in the boys’ division.
“We had more depth than everybody else, which worked for us,” said Carbon head coach Jimmy Jewkes. “We are young [but] the kids performed on both sides. They exceeded our expectations.”
Emery’s head coach, Eric Nielson, was glad the Spartans could get a meet under their belts. “I was happy with where everyone is staring the year off. It was good to get an idea of where everyone is at.”
Carbon’s good day did not end with its great team finishes. It also had four athletes qualify for state in the athletes’ first meet of the year. Marianna Molinar qualified in girls’ javelin, Harley Migliori in shot put, Emma Christiansen in the high jump and Carson Frame in the boys’ long jump. Cale Allred was the lone Spartan that qualified for state when he did so in the javelin.
“We hope to have more tomorrow,” commented Nielson. Emery will host the
