On the cusp of graduation day, family, friends, pupils and more gathered in the Carbon High School auditorium to recognize the hard working athletes of the 2017-18 school year at the Espy Awards. Beginning with a parade of athletes that welcomed all to the stage, Carbon High Athletic Director Ted Bianco kicked off the evening.
This year, 348 students played in various sports at the high school. There were five region champions as well as a number of coaches that won awards. Bianco himself was named the athletic director of the year, receiving praise from CHS Principal Bruce Bean and the rest of the crowd.
Coach Josh Huntsman was named the 3A Football Coach of the Year. Cheer coach Trish Anderson and swim coach Kamra Davis each won awards as well as they were named the State Cheer Coach of the Year and the 3A Coach of the Year, respectively.
There will be some changes in coaching for the 2018-19 upcoming school year. One such change is the retirement of Tom King, the head boys’ golf coach for seven years. Boys’ tennis coach Pete Riggs will also be taking over girls’ tennis in the new year.
Each sport was called to the stage one at a time. Each coach thanked their players for the great year and bade farewell to those that would be graduating the following evening.
