Carbon track and field competed in the Old Capital Invitational in Fillmore over the weekend. The Dinos put together another strong meet in the young season. Head Coach Jimmy Jewkes commented, “it was a wild weekend. There was snow on the ground.”
Taci Tapia and Megan Swasey ended on top in the long jump with first and second place finishes, respectively, while Marianna Molinar won the javelin throw. Makenna Blanc and Grace Broadbear rounded off second and third place in the 800 meter. Broadbear then improved to second place in the 1600 meter. Emma Haddock and Swasey ended in second in the 3200 meter and 100 meter hurdles, respectively. The girls’ 4×100 and 4×400 relays took second behind Delta in each event. The Lady Dinos sprint medley relay 2-2-4-8 ended in third.
In the boys’ events, Carson Frame won the long jump while the boys’ 4×400 relay also took first. Jacob Jewkes finished less than two tenths of a second behind Jake Bailey (Juab) to take second in the 400 meter. Michael Banasky enjoyed a second place finish in javelin. Jared Spendlove was six hundredths of a second behind second place Carson Burian from Rowland Hall in the 800 meter for third place. Spendlove again finished third in the 1600 meter. James Bryner followed suit with a third place finish of his own in the 3200 meter.
Jewkes continued, “We came together this past weekend. In the 13 years [I’ve coached], I’ve never seen a team pull for everyone on the team. I’ve always wanted to see that but the kids have to figure it out. It was really cool to see.” Both boys’ and girls’ teams took second overall behind Delta. The Dinos were only five points behind the Rabbits (108-103) while the Lady Dinos posted a 139 score behind the Lady Rabbits’ 154.5.
“This week’s the big one. We have about 25 schools coming,” concluded Jewkes.
Carbon will host its next meet on Saturday, March 23 as the Dinos face off against local schools, including Emery and Pinnacle, among others.
