“We want the trophies,” said Carbon High’s head track coach Jimmy Jewkes prior to his team’s trip Saturday to the Blue Mountain Invitational in Blanding.
Trophies are awarded to the top finishing teams in the boys and girls divisions, which are then kept at the school until the following year.
The Lady Dinos tallied a meet-high 185 points to capture the girl’s title, while the boys finished in a respectable fourth with 67. Overall, ten teams competed in the meet.
Freshman Zaharah Rossi had quite a day. In her first event, Rossi placed second in the 3200 meters, then turned around and ran the 800-meter leg of the individual medley, where she also placed second. Rossi then gutted out another second place finish, this time in the 1600. Though she was scheduled to run in a final event, the 800, Jewkes pulled Rossi from the race.
“She is the type of athlete you have to yank out of a competition,” he said. “She had done so much for us.”
Another freshman performed well and scored 26 points on her own. Sarah Ohlwiler placed first in the 100 meter hurdles (16.85) and the long jump (16-08.25). She also took third in the 100 meters with a time of 13.95.
