Before Carbon opened its match against North Sevier on Tuesday, the team set aside some time to honor Dave Smith, who coached most his life and also taught at Carbon High for 10 years.

Part of the ceremony was to announce the “Coach Dave Smith Legacy Award,” which will be presented to the wrester that finishes the season next year and embodies the values that Smith represented. Along with a plaque, a scholarship will also be presented to the chosen wrestler at the end of the year.

A committee will be formed and include Smith’s wife, Kathy, to go through the decision making process. Some qualifications for the award are wrestling for Carbon High for a minimum of three years, demonstrating leadership and loyalty to the team, practicing and competing with intensity, honoring the school through grateful citizenship and excelling in the academic arena.

Following the highlight of the evening, the Dinos were unable to find success once the match began. “Nothing went our way last night on the varsity level, including scrambles, pinning opportunities and physicality. We were smoked from the get go,” said head coach Brock Fausett. “Hats off to North Sevier’s team. They were ready to compete and battle. We were not. I’m hopeful our kids have learned that shedding old habits and doing what we do in practice will make the difference.”

Carbon will see how quickly they can turn it around. “We will see this weekend if they can bounce back. Improvement is there, we just need more consistency with it,” Fausett continued. Carbon heads to Manti this weekend for a tournament. He concluded, “I’m proud to be their coach, despite the loss.”
