Press Release

Castleview Hospital is dedicated to providing excellent medical care for your child. We also want to make sure that his or her experience is a positive one. When a child has to visit the Emergency Department (ED), it can be a frightening and stressful time for both the child and parent. At Castleview Hospital Emergency Department, we help ease the fears of children often associated with a trip to the emergency room. A new addition to our ED is a kid-friendly patient room. The atmosphere of the room is calming and fun for scared and sick children. A water-filled bubbling window, TV, and colorful ocean-themed murals on the wall provide an alternative focus from the serious work of the attending Emergency Department Physicians and nurses. This room was designed specifically to help kids and their parents feel safe and comfortable.

In an emergency, every minute matters. Whether it’s a broken bone or something much more serious, our highly trained ED providers are equipped to handle a wide range of medical emergencies. Our ED features 10 new private patient rooms, including one dedicated room for children and their families.

Castleview Hospital also features a kid’s room in our laboratory. Much like our kid’s emergency room, the room in the lab designed for kids provides built-in distractions for children to focus on during a blood draw. A water-filled bubbling window, ocean-themed murals on the walls and colorful lights help distract and comfort children while receiving treatment.

Castleview Hospital also staffs a child life specialist who specializes in pediatric health care and works with children and families in hospitals and other settings providing psychosocial care, helping them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, surgeries and more. Belinda Thayn, our certified child life specialist, has worked at Castleview for 2 ½ years. She was trained in child life at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital. Along with providing direct psychosocial care for patients in the hospital, Thayn offers a free pre-op prep class and tour for children ages 2-12 and their parents who are scheduled to have surgery or dental sedation. Your child is welcome to attend even if their surgery is not being performed at Castleview. For more information on our pre-op prep class, please call 435-636-4847.

“The hospital can feel like a threatening and unfamiliar place for children. As Castleview’s certified child life specialist, it is my job to help our youngest patients cope with the various things that happen in the hospital. Their emotional well-being is my priority. I saw an opportunity during the recent remodel to make a change to the hospital’s environment that would directly impact the way children are able to cope during tough procedures. It was wonderful to be able to work directly with hospital administration in designing pediatric rooms that provide built-in distraction tools. I am also looking forward to finding more ways to create change that will make our hospital a place that children feel supported during tough health care experiences,” said Belinda Thayn, CCLS.

Castleview Hospital is dedicated to providing you and your child with both excellent medical care and emotional support during a frightening time, whether that may be a scheduled surgery or a trip to our ED. Our hope is that our kid friendly rooms will help ease fears and provide comfort during times when it is needed most.
