Crossing guards at Huntington Elementary are very concerned with the safety of the students walking or riding bikes to school.
They are asking drivers to please put away devices and be alert, especially around the school. One of the problems seems to be cars on First North approaching the intersection on a green light and then turning south even when there is a crossing guard in the middle of the street holding up a stop sign. As long as the crossing guard is on the street, it should be treated as a red light. There is worry about the lack of concern among drivers on the corners of Center Street and First East.
Crossing gaurds have requested increased surveillance by the sheriff’s department and citations will be issued.
“Everyone needs to be more vigilant in their driving around the schools,” pleaded crossing guard Estelle Grange.
