Press Release
Congressman Jason Chaffetz has announced he will resign on June 30. This marks the first time in Utah a sitting Congressman has stepped down midterm. There has been a lot of speculation about why Congressman Chaffetz is stepping down and he stands by his initial comments that his family must come first. As per state code, Governor Herbert has called for an election to replace Congressman Chaffetz that coincides with municipal elections happening this August and November.
Municipal candidates file in June with the primary being in August and the general election in November. Governor Herbert announced the Congressional race will follow the same calendar as the municipal election. Voters will vote for city candidates as well as the US Congressional seat on the same ballot.
“The election for Congressman Chaffetz’s seat will be similar to every election, just shorter, and who doesn’t like a shorter campaign season,” said Kendra Seeley, Carbon County Republican Chair.
Republican candidates who have filed to run for Chaffetz seat include: State Senator Deidre Henderson from Spanish Fork, State Representative Brad Daw from Orem and State Senator Margaret Dayton from Orem. Senator Dayton is most recognizable to Carbon County residents as being the wife of Dr. Lynn Dayton, who was an OBGYN in Price for a number of years.
