Soroptimist International of Price was named the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce’s Charity of the Month at a luncheon on last Wednesday.
Terry Willis, a representative from the organization, was on hand to accept the honor and speak on behalf of the charity. The Soroptimist International of Price knows that when women in a community are strong, the entire community benefits. With that in mind, it has been working on that model in the community for over 60 years.
For many of those years, the service organization has hosted its annual fundraising banquet, which features a four-course dinner as well as wine and beer samples. Hosted at the Carbon Country Club, the charity event is in its 44th year took place Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
Soroptimist International of Price uses all the event proceeds to provide projects and programs to women and girls in the community. Scholarships are awarded to women who are the head-of-household, so that they may continue their educations.
Also, a scholarship is awarded to a teen, aged 14-17, who engages in volunteer work in the community. The group has also assisted girls with financial difficulties with school activity participation. Drug court graduates have been given makeovers, foster children given stuffed duffel bags and many other services have been provided throughout the years.
