The Carbon High girls’ tennis team has met some hard opponents during the first few matches of the 2018 year. The first match, which was played against Grand in Price on Aug. 14, saw player Jewelianna Nielsen victorious in first singles with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
Unfortunately, Nicole Swasey in second singles was bested, scoring 0-6, 0-6. Third singles forfeited that match while first and second doubles, comprised of Aubrey Fausett and Alex Cartwright and Tennysen Coon and Kaydence Scoville, were both defeated with scores of 4-6, 6-7 and 4-6, 4-6, respectively.
Aug. 15 saw the team traveling to Manti where Nielsen once again triumphant in her match, 6-3 and 6-2. Second and third singles fought tough opponents as Ana Olivas and Gabby Christensen were defeated with scores of 2-6, 0-6 and 0-6, 0-6. The first doubles team of Swasey and Coon found themselves bested with final scores 0-6, 0-6 and second doubles followed suit with the team of Cartwright and Scoville scoring 0-6, 1-6.
Then, the girls’ tennis team hosted Juab on their home court on Aug. 22. Once again, Nielsen played well and ended the game victorious with scores of 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Olivas represented second singles again but met much of the same fate with a score of 2-6, 1-6. Ka’auna Harrison played third singles and was defeated with scores of 0-6, 0-6.
Both doubles teams of Fausett and Cartwright and Swasey and Coon were bested with finishing scores of 1-6, 1-6 and 0-6, 0-6. Head coach Pete Riggs remarked that while the team has struggled in the opening matches, it is largely due to the team being somewhat inexperienced.
The Lady Dinos next look to meet with Gunnison for a match on Tuesday.
