John Gerald Shiew was arrested and booked into the Emery County jail last Wednesday on multiple charges that include rape, sexual abuse of a child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Sheiw, 36, was able to make bail that was set at $61,291.
Shiew was a civilian employee of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Jail. He has been placed on administrative leave pending a departmental internal investigation.
Price City Police Captain Bill Barnes issued the following statement:
On October 30, 2013 at 1800, John Gerald Shiew, DOB 12/7/77, Carbonville, Utah, was arrested by Price Police detectives and booked into the Emery County Jail. Shiew was booked in on Rape, a 1st degree felony, Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, a 2nd degree felony, Child Abuse, a class A misdemeanor, Enticing a Minor (2 counts), a class A misdemeanor, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (2 counts), a class B misdemeanor, and Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor (2 counts), a class A misdemeanor.
Carbon County Prosecutor Gene Strate said he still does not have much information on the circumstances of the case. He stated that Price City Police are working this as an active case and that they are following up on information and leads.
Strate also said that once an individual is released from jail, the clock slows down on how fast they have to set a court date. This is not because the case becomes less important, but it allows for legal council on both sides time to prepare. At this time a hearing date for Shiew has not been set on the court docket.
In Dec. 2010, John Gerald Shiew was a Carbon County jail guard. He was given a three-year suspension by the Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council after it was determined that he lied to police investigators.
