Investigations have determined that only 4,000 gallons of crude oil was released after the Maverick Tanker roll over on SR6 Thursday night as opposed to the 8,000 gallons originally reported. Of that amount, 750-1,000 gallons made its way to into the river before counter measures were deployed by emergency personnel.
Significant spill containment and clean up efforts will continue along the Price River until Wednesday, July 17. During the afternoon briefing on Saturday, July 14, Envirocare, the contracted cleanup company’s representative reported 43 bags of crude had been removed from the river in the 12-hour operational period.
Oil containment booms have been deployed in four locations down steam of the spill along the river. These booms skim the river and trap the oil that floats, preventing it from going further down stream. Clean up personnel physically stand in the river with a net and remove the gelatinous material. Once this effort has removed a large percentage of the contaminate, crews will walk the river and polish any areas that residue has remained.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is monitoring the cleanup and will be the deciding factor as to when efforts are able to be concluded.
