Community Garden Presented by Local Food Bank

Although it has been a part of the Carbon County Food Bank for years, many people in the community may not be aware of the Community Garden adjacent to the facility. The garden produces food that benefits the food bank and the citizens that use its services, but it is also available for community use.

There are many people that work hard in supporting the Community Garden. IFA Manager Daniel Thatcher and Doug Warden, home and garden manager, are big supporters. Also apart of IFA is master gardener Ron Patterson, who teaches gardening as a USU Extension agent. Patterson built the high tunnel that assists in growing the food in the garden. The high tunnel was able to get the garden from 3,010 pounds produced the previous year to just under 10,000 last year.

More support for the garden comes from Wayne Clausing, owner of Sutherlands and Terry Johnson, program coordinator at the Sun Center at USU Eastern. The food bank wants to give a special thanks to Price City Mayor Joe Piccolo and others for their generous work and donations given as well as Select Health, CJ’s and Southwest Plumbing Supply.

Julie Rosier, Carbon County Food Bank coordinator, is the person to contact if you would like to get more information on the garden or to volunteer or donate.

There are a variety of upcoming events for the Community Garden that are open to the community. The first is on April 15 beginning at 9 a.m. as volunteers with gather for the Community Garden planting party. There is no experience in gardening needed to be a part of the event. Water and snacks will be provided, but volunteers should be sure to bring their own gloves.

The other event will be the Community Garden Harvest Celebration. The Harvest Celebration will feature pumpkin carving, face painting, a climbing wall and a cake walk. This will take place on Sept. 24 beginning at noon.

“We would love to have as much of the community a part of it as possible,” said event organizer Geri Gamber.

To contact the Carbon County Food Bank, call (435) 637-9232 and ask for Rosier or stop by 375 South Carbon Avenue in Price.
