Survivors, caregivers, supporters, friends and family gathered at the Colosimo baseball field in Price for the annual Relay for Life event on Friday.
The evening began with a dinner for area cancer survivors. An opening ceremony then welcomed those in attendance before survivors took to the track, walking the first of many laps that would be taken throughout the event. Caregivers then joined the survivors in the second lap. Teams from throughout the community joined in, going around the track throughout the night and into the morning.
This year marks the 30th anniversary since Dr. Gordy Klatt walked for 24 hours to support those battling cancer, ultimately kickstarting the Relay for Life organization.
“In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern cancer,” the Relay for Life website shares. “A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.”
