The Carbon County Commission meeting took place on Wednesday evening.

Every six months, the commission chair is rotated. During the meeting, the chair rotated from commissioner Jae Potter to commissioner Casey Hopes.

Carbon County Economic Development Director Tami Ursenbach reported to commissioners on economic development activities. Ursenbach wanted to bring to light the fact that although it seems that Carbon County is on a steady decline with businesses and members of the community, it’s actually the opposite.

Last year, the average wages went down by $3 an hour and have increased this year to $.50. Population is also starting to rise with a 150-200 person increase. Ursenbach also noted that a Beautification Committee was recently formed with three people on the team thus far. The goal of the committee is to make Carbon County more appealing to visitors and hopeful businesses. The off-ramps of the highway, parks and other public areas are the current places being looked at for projects.

A public hearing also took place during the commission meeting to address concerns that citizens have about the RV park that may be built in the field that is located between Helper and Spring Glen. Many of the members of the community that spoke stated that they were not pleased with the idea. To them, the idea of having an RV Park in their neighborhood would be very intrusive. Phil Howa and his wife were among those that spoke, stating that if they ever had a hope of selling their home, it would never sell being inconveniently placed right by an RV park.

Another citizen stated her concerns of the traffic increase and the current state of the road. The fact that there isn’t a road wide enough leading to that field is also concerning, due to the fact that RVs wouldn’t be able navigate successfully. The RV park is still in its preliminary stages and the property hasn’t yet been sold.
